Sonia Harcourt Talks with Captain Jack
Sonia is an intelligent, well put together woman and I knew that going into the interview. I have always admired her from a distance for her views and I was happy that we finally got a chance to talk. Of course, Sonia is a sexy redhead and that’s another appealing aspect of her persona. We had a wide-ranging talk and I hope you learn something!
Captain Jack: Tell me about Sonia Harcourt.
Sonia Harcourt: I was a theatre kid. I was a Theatre major and Musical minor in college. The original plan was to try and be on Broadway. That obviously didn’t quite work out. I realized as I was living the lifestyle that I didn’t like working nights and weekends and missing out on family and friend events because you have to wake up at the crack of dawn to audition. From there, I did a little bit of everything. I did retail, I did construction and I was a dog walker.
CJ: Have you lived in New York your whole life?
Sonia: I was born in Central New York but I have been in the city for 16 years in January.
CJ: How old are you?
Sonia: I will be 34 in December.
CJ: How long have you been in the industry?
Sonia: My 3-year anniversary is coming up in September.
CJ: When did you lose your virginity?
Sonia: I was a late bloomer. I didn’t lose my virginity until my first boyfriend at 23.
CJ: Why did you wait so long?
Sonia: I was painfully insecure for most of my life. I never had boyfriends in high school. I didn’t get hit on in bars or anything. So I actually met my first boyfriend on OK! Cupid. Once you get past 20, 21, you don’t want to give it up to just anybody at that point. It’s weird. So that was how that happened.
CJ: So once you got the first one out of the way, I’m sure you got a little bit more confidence, were you promiscuous at all? Did you start sleeping around?
Sonia: No, he and I were together for about 2 ½ years. At first, I thought he was the one so when he broke up with me, I was pretty devastated. And I think I only had three fuck buddies between him and my next serious boyfriend, then my husband. I did not have a whole lot of sexual experience before my marriage.
CJ: Were you with girls before porn?
Sonia: Nope. I lost my lesbian virginity at my first AVN. It was A-MAZING! I know there was sexual interest. When I was in the drama club in high school, I thought, ‘Yeah, this is where it’s at!’ I made out with girls and stuff but my first girl/girl experience was at my first AVN and it was a DC Comix Play Threesome with Emelia Song and Chrissy LeBlanc.
CJ: Being your first time with a girl, did you know what to do?

That’s just always been an important part of who I am. I’m very fortunate that I have a wonderful husband that can financially support us so that I didn’t have to sign with an agent or take any jobs that would affect that part of my moral compass anyways, if that makes sense. When I first got started, it was a lot of, ‘No, you can’t do crossover! You can’t work with Trans Girls!’ And I was, ‘Fuck you then, I’m not working with you!’ (laughs)
CJ: You are so sex-positive. How tough is it, especially in the United States, where we glorify violence but, at the same time, we say sex or sexuality is bad?
Sonia: Dude! You just touched on my life philosophy and how frustrating it is in this country! Violence and school shootings are an everyday thing but if titties are exposed, it’s ‘Ohhhh! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!’ I can’t even begin to tell you how infuriating that hypocrisy is to me. I would be a little bit more understanding if it was both; if people were equally offended by one or the other but it’s not! I don’t know if it’s because we’re a young country, but we’re so puritanical. My tattoo artist is from Italy and she told me that when she first came to the country, ‘I never wore a bra until I got to America. And I started getting dirty looks. You guys are just crude!’ We are! I just don’t understand. Maybe it’s a time thing and we’ll get over it but there is such a shame associated with sex. Not even just sex but the human body. Nudity and breasts aren’t inherently sexual but we make them that. I don’t know if that will ever change if it ever will.
CJ: Why did you decide to get into the adult industry?
Sonia: I’ll try to make a long story short. I had a bad experience with one of my favorite dogs. The owners were the kind of people where if I ever asked, she would always be there for me. I took care of their dog for years. I was the first-ever non-family member to stay with their dog. They got married in the Bahamas and on their 5-year anniversary, I sat for them and the little guy jumped off the bed which he NEVER did—ever. In the entire six years I took care of him, never. And, long story short, I tried to catch him and he slipped a disk and they never talked to me again. So that really changed me. I was going to get a grooming license and full-on devoted to pet care. So when that happened, I thought, ‘Shit, what the hell do I do now?’ And my best friend happened to work at an LGBTQ non-profit organization and she mentioned the crossover with sex work and they’re not always as experience or quick to offer help or advice in that community. She said that I always felt comfortable talking about sex and would I ever consider being an advocate. I made a store with sex-positive merchandise and got to know the industry and made a lot of friends. I got approached by an agent and thought, ‘Woah!’ I thought about it when I was younger but was so painfully insecure that it was not an option. And so I thought, ‘Wow, that shipped hasn’t sailed?’ I was about to turn 31 and didn’t think I could get into the industry at that late date, can I? So I said, ‘What the hell? Let’s see what happens!’ And here we are!
CJ: How did you come up with your stage name?
Sonia: It’s actually a combination of two of my favorite theatre roles. ‘Sonia’ from Godspell which is why it’s spelled with an ‘i’ and not a ‘y’. And ‘Jacqueline Harcourt’ from Me and My Girl.
CJ: So what was your first scene like? You were not really sexually experienced and then you had all the cameras and people watching. Were you intimidated? Nervous? Turned on?
Sonia: My first ever scene, my first ever paid shoot, was just one-on-one. There was no camera crew, just me and the guy. I was definitely nervous because, at that point, I hadn’t slept with anybody but my husband for 3 years. And I was worried, ‘What if I can’t do it?’, ‘What if I’m really bad at this?’…I had a lot of questions. But then I realized it’s like any other performance where you can just flip the switch and I’m the character and it went really well. It was just very natural.

Sonia: I like working with my hands so I like home improvement projects, crafting, cosplay, especially making costumes. Those are some of my favorites.
CJ: What kind of music do you like?
Sonia: Everything. I’m very eclectic. I love music.
CJ: Do you have any favorite movies?
Sonia: Hubby and me are very big movie buffs. Our wedding was actually movie-themed. I kind of have a favorite in every genre.
CJ: What’s your favorite TV shows?
Sonia: I’m really into adult cartoons, like Bob’s Burger, Nickelodeon, especially 90s Nickelodeon.
CJ: What’s the kinkiest thing you’ve ever done?
