Captain Jack: In the past year, you started directing. How did you get into that?
Whitney Wright: I got into that by seeing that a bunch of performers had started becoming directors. There were announcements about a “directorial debut” and I thought, I wanted that for me, for my life! I would like that a lot. I’ve always loved writing; I’ve been writing for a year before I started seeing that. Then I saw that and thought, ‘I really want to do that!’ After I started seeing that, it was like a thing that went off in my mind. That’s one of the first times that I wanted to do it and I really saw myself doing it. Whenever I went out to shoot for MissaX in Wisconsin for the second time after I had see her hire Kristen Scott and Serena Blair, that’s when I thought, ‘I’m just gonna pitch myself!’ And I did! I told them, ‘I know you just hired on two directors and you’re probably good on that for a while but if you want someone else, I really want to do it and I know a crew that wants to work with me. I have really great stories and I’ll even send you some! I really, really want to do this and I will make you proud.’ They talked about it and they started me off with one scene a month, which was the agreement, and I now I’m doing five to seven.
CJ: I know you wrote the Gold Star for Pure Taboo. Do you write the other stories that you direct?
Whitney: I don’t write all of them that I direct. I wrote the Gold Star when Bree (Mills) approached me to model collab. I had written a few ideas and sent them off to her and that was one that she really liked. I thought, ‘OK, great!’ I wrote that and I wrote the more recent one From Afar, A Whitney Wright Story. That was another model collab with Pure Taboo and they had Michael Vegas in that one. That was my personal favorite but I missed nominations period. For MissaX and All Her Luv, I do write all of my own stories. For Gamma, I don’t write them, they send them to me.
CJ: Where do you come up with the ideas?
Whitney: Sometimes I do get into a creative stump, I guess. But I always say that I come up with my ideas by asking myself “what ifs”, thinking of the worst case scenario in every possible situation because that’s just the person I am and how my brain is hard wired to do. I feel like having that quality, be it good or bad or whatever, it helps my mind go to a place where ‘what if this happened?’ or ‘this could be a worse situation’ and then have sex. It makes it sound easy but I pull inspirations from movies or shows or even lines that I hear people say. ‘Oh my gosh, I can see it! I can see this whole movie unfolding!’
CJ: Do people audition for you or do you just know that they’d fit the role?
Whitney: For Gamma, I’m sent a list and they know better than I. They see numbers and analytics and all that. They send me a list and tell me to try for people from one to ten. For Missa, sometimes she’ll tell me that there’s this person that she really wants to use and that she wants me to try them out then, of course, I’ll put them in there. Then, she’ll say use whoever you want for this part and this part and this part but I still like to send her a list. What I did for Adelaide, I sent her a list of girls for the role that Gianna (Dior) played, for the role that Seth (Gamble) played and Codey (Steele), or course and Khloe (Kapri). We were always going to use Codey and Seth but I think she wanted someone older to play the psychiatrist but I told her how I thought it would be portrayed. I had Codey and Khloe as a step couple and she said, ‘OK, yeah, I see it. Let’s do it that way.’ We did it that way and I sent her a list and she sent back her top three and I went for them. That’s how it got to that conclusion.
CJ: You mentioned Adelaide, that’s nominated a few times for Awards, you’re also nominated for Performer of the Year. Which one would you rather win, Performer of the Year or Director of the Year?
Whitney: Performer of the Year! (laughs) I love performing and I think the Performer of the Year award is the biggest award that I could get. I mean, I would love to eventually get Director of the Year. I know I have a long ways to go. I’m not trying to step on anybody’s toes. I just told someone in another interview, I feel like a corky in a dog race or something with a bunch of greyhounds. I’m trying and I really want to keep up with everyone! I would love to get nominated for that eventually. Maybe in a few years, that would be really nice. As someone who has been in the business since late 2016, the Female Performer of the Year one is the biggest and it means the most. It’s like the golden nugget. If that’s even a thing!
CJ: With all the directing that you do, are you transitioning away from performing?
Whitney: I’m still going to be doing that just as much. And I still do it just as much. I’m a Spiegler Girl so we tend to work a lot and I usually leave my months open until the last week and then schedule them in, unless it’s a big project. I still perform and I love performing and I don’t want to quit performing any time soon so I’m not going to. (laughs_
CJ: You have tremendous eyes, along with that great body. Have you ever used them to get out of a ticket or….
Whitney: Oh yeah! All the time! Why not? I feel like I was given big eyes so all the better to look up at people with a glisten of a tear and be like, ‘Sorry!’
CJ: For fans that are new to you, what are some of your funnest or hottest scenes that you could recommend?
Whitney: Oooh, I don’t know! It just depends on what you’re into! I love everything from Evil Angel. I love every scene with Markus Dupree. I love every scene with Xander Corvus, with Small Hands, with Ramon Nomar, Isiah Maxwell, Prince….there’s so many of them that I love. I feel like if you like the scenes with the chemistry and ones I’m obsessed with the male performer, then any one of those would be good. (laughs) There’s so many! I would recommend to look on adultdvdtalk.com and the ones that are reviewed by Captain Jack and the other fine people at adultdvdtalk.
CJ: Are there any performers or directors you would love to work with that you haven’t had a chance to yet?
Whitney: Scott Nails, I’d like to work with him. I’d like to work with Keiran Lee. I’d like to work with Giselle Palmer. Who else, I think someone just came back. I’d like to work with Sophie Dee. When I first started, I got compared to her a lot. I had smaller lips then and a little bit more of a triangle face but I did get compared to her a lot. And then, of course, there are those I always love working with like Angela White, Abigail Mac, the male performers I just listed.
CJ: Do you have any fantasies you would like to live out on camera?
Whitney: I don’t know. Probably yeah. I don’t know if they’d really be allowed on camera. (laughs) You know what, after some years of watching certain porn, I feel like I’ve moved on to some more taboo things.
CJ: What have you learned about yourself sexually since joining porn?
Whitney: That I love sex, I can say that. That’s a given. It’s probably the dumbest answer that you’ve ever gotten. I love sex, I love exploring my sexuality and I just love having sex on-camera. It’s weird to describe to people who are back home or my friends that I’ve known that are like, ‘Oh, you do it because I’m sure the money’s good.’ Yeah, the money’s good but I’ve got to the point that I really love to have sex on-camera. Who wouldn’t want to do this for a living if they had no fear of repercussions or anything else. I feel like after the shock factor wore off, everyone was like ‘whatever’ and now I feel like I’m just doing my best.
CJ: If you weren’t in porn, what would you be doing right now?
Whitney: I don’t know. Probably on an island. I don’t know. I would probably be somewhere in Mexico, doing a simple job. Have a fruit stand or something or just do something so small that it would be close to the beach and I could be happy and barefoot all the time. (laughs)
CJ: Do you ever get recognized in public?
Whitney: Hmmmm. I’ve been recognized a few times. Once was at the club and then the other times were in, I think, in an Uber. Sometimes but I think when I go out and have my makeup on and everything, I blend in pretty well.
CJ: And how can the fans follow you on social media?
Whitney: On Twitter, I’m @WhitneyWrightX and Instagram is @WhitneyWrightxo.
